April 5, 2001 --- (Wilmington, DE) --- Catholic Diocese of Wilmington has announce the names of the two new regional elementary schools to be constructed in the diocese: Christ the Teacher Catholic School in Glasgow, Delaware and Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School in Ocean Pines, Maryland. Christ the Teacher Catholic School will be built on 35 acres at the corner of Route 40 and Frazer Road in Glasgow, Delaware. Construction of this building will begin in July 2001. Opening date is planned for September 2002. The architectural firm, Buck Simpers Architect & Associates, Inc. will design the building. EDIS is the Construction Manager. The school is ex-pected to open with grades Kindergarten through 5. Current plans call for grades 6 through 8 to be phased in at a later date. Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School in Ocean Pines, Maryland will be built on a 25-acre site adjacent to St. John Neumann Church. Like the school in Glasgow, Most Blessed Sac-rament Catholic School will house two sections of each grade, Kindergarten through 8. The Diocese has targeted the opening of this school for September 2003. While no architect for Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School has been selected, work - more - Diocese Names Schools 04/05/01 Page 2 of 3 has begun obtaining county approvals from Worcester County Commissioners. Last July the Commissioners approved a "special exception" (zoning) to build the school on the selected site. A number of approvals were required before the special exception could be granted. Diocesan officials expect that an architect for Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School should be selected within three months. The decision to build elementary schools in Glasgow and Ocean Pines was based, in part, on the results of a study conducted by Neal Meitler Associates completed in July 1998. "The construction of Christ the Teacher and Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Schools is in response to the need for more classroom space to meet the cries of parents all over the diocese for Catholic school education," commented the Most Reverend Michael Saltarelli, Bishop of the Diocese of Wilmington. "By building these regional schools, we serve the needs of many parishioners, and keep Catholic Education both close to home and affordable." A special diocesan committee of teachers, principals, and education specialists designed the program for the schools using the 'cluster' concept which, in effect, creates three schools within the school by grouping grades Kindergarten-2, 3-5, and 6-8 in separate areas. The preliminary design for Christ the Teacher Catholic School envisions a two story, 68,000 square foot building, and encompasses large classrooms, a science lab, media/library center, art and music rooms, technology center, gymnasium and cafeteria, administrative offices, and a chapel. Appropriate athletic fields are also being planned. The Diocesan Schools Office hopes to have the principal for Christ the Teacher Catholic School identified by the summer of 2001. Shortly after that announcement, the process for enrollment will be publicized. Eventu-ally, a new church dedicated to St. Margaret of Scotland will be built on the same campus as - more - Diocese Names Schools 04/05/01 page 3 of 3 Christ the Teacher Catholic School. "The academic and co-curricular programs for both schools will reflect the care and quality associated with Catholic schools. The programs are designed to ensure that the children encounter Jesus Christ through daily, Catholic education," Brother James Malone, CFX, Super-intendent of Schools for the Diocese of Wilmington said. "All the teachers will be qualified and prepared both academically and religiously to assist the parents in their role as the primary teachers of their children." A unique aspect of these schools is the governance model. Each regional school will service several parishes. Christ the Teacher Catholic School will serve parishioners from St. Margaret of Scotland in Glasgow, Holy Family in Newark, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Bear, and St. Joseph in Middletown. Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School will serve up to five or six parishes from Southern Sussex County in Delaware and Worcester County in Maryland. A Board of pastors will serve in an advisory capacity to the schools' principals and will set basic policies such as tuition rates, the number of seats designated for each parish, budget, and admissions. Lay representatives will be added to the Board at a later date. The construction of both schools will be financed by the Bringing the Vision to Life Capital Stewardship Campaign now in progress in the Diocese of Wilmington. The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington was established in 1868 and comprises 56 parishes, 20 missions and over 30 schools serving the State of Delaware and the nine counties of Maryland's Eastern Shore.
