Jefrey O. Nelson Is New President of Thomas More College of Liberal Arts

The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts is pleased to announce that it has selected Jeffrey O. Nelson, longtime senior vice president at the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI), Wilmington, Delaware, to succeed the College's founding president, Peter V. Sampo, as president. Mr. Nelson will take office as the College's second president this coming September.

At ISI, Mr. Nelson was part of a small leadership team that recently concluded a successful anniversary program campaign that raised more than $75 million. He also directed the Institute's marketing and public relations efforts during that campaign. In addition to his executive duties at ISI, Mr. Nelson was the founding publisher of ISI Books, the Institute's publishing imprint, lauded by Publishers Weekly and described by National Review as "an important factor in the world of book publishing." He was for ten years the editor of both The Intercollegiate Review and The University Bookman, a quarterly book review journal. He is currently publisher of the academic journal Studies in Burke and His Time. Mr. Nelson also managed a national lecture, conference, student newspaper publishing, and debate program at the Institute.

Jeffrey Nelson has edited two book collections: Redeeming the Time, by Russell Kirk, and Perfect Sowing: Reflections of a Bookman, by Henry Regnery; co-edited an award-winning treasury of the historian John Lukacs' writings entitled Remembered Past; and is project director of the popular national college guide, Choosing the Right College: The Whole Truth About America's Top Schools. He serves as the general editor of the Institute's "Student Guides to the Major Disciplines" Series, which the Wall Street Journal described as "mini-classics," and is editor of its "Library of Modern Thinkers." Mr. Nelson was featured recently in a New York Times front-page news article about a major new reference work he co-edited, American Conservatism: An Encyclopedia. He is a frequent and popular guest on radio and television talk shows across the country. He is also co-founder of the Russell Kirk Center for Cultural Renewal (Mecosta, Michigan); a board member of the G. K. Chesterton Institute for the Study of Faith and Culture; a member and former trustee of the Philadelphia Society; trustee of the American Council for Economics and Society; trustee of the Wilbur Foundation, Santa Barbara, California; and a charter member and program director of the Wilmington, Delaware chapter of Legatus, a national organization of Catholic business leaders.

Mr. Nelson is a graduate of the University of Detroit and Yale University Divinity School and is completing his doctorate in American History at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland). He will be relocating to New Hampshire this fall with his wife, Cecilia, and their three young children: Isabel, Thomas, and Julia.

Mr. Nelson looks forward to maintaining and building upon Thomas More College's unique liberal arts curriculum and Catholic community spirit. According to Nelson, "I have long admired Peter Sampo for his balanced educational vision of intellectual and human formation. I look forward to being a faithful steward of the College's past and to working with the College community as we address the challenges of twenty-first century higher education." Founder Peter Sampo echoed Mr. Nelson and observed, "With the arrival of Jeffrey Nelson I can retire from my administrative duties fully confident that the College is in competent and wise hands. I look forward to contributing to the College in the way I love most, teaching. In that role I anticipate availing myself of more of the good fruit the College has been blessed to produce in the persons of its students: past, present, and future." The College's Board voted unanimously to appoint Mr. Nelson, entrusting him with the task of devising and implementing plans to increase the student body, and related activities several times over.
