20 Scholars Define Modern Catholic Social Teaching

Washington, D.C. -- Catholic clergy and laity in America have long sought to understand and interpret the church's official instruction on social issues such as war and peace, religious pluralism, and sexuality. Now, with the publication of Modern Catholic Social Teaching, a new book from Georgetown University Press, all Catholics have a definitive resource to help examine and illuminate their faith tradition.

Twenty prominent U.S. Catholic scholars, all of whom are committed to the ongoing renewal of the Catholic Church in the spirit of Vatican II, and led by editor Kenneth R. Himes, O.F.M. of Boston College, collaborated on the project. Their work provides invaluable insights into the heart and history of Catholic social teaching.

"The process that led to the writing of this volume was a three-year project that brought together leading scholars to examine the major texts of modern Catholic social teaching," says Himes. "The result is the most comprehensive and in-depth treatment of all the major documents that can be found in one volume."

Modern Catholic Social Teaching is an intellectually rigorous and deeply faithful book that examines the key documents that comprise the central corpus of Catholic social teaching, and explores the social thought of the "modern" era, generally accepted as beginning in 1891 with the publication of Pope Leo XIII's Rerum novarum. In addition, the book reviews how Catholic social teaching has been received in the U.S. and includes a discussion of social issues such as marriage, family, and the dignity of women.

Designed for scholars, students and a general Catholic audience, Modern Catholic Social Teaching is comprised of three parts. Part One explores the foundations of Catholic social teaching; Part Two includes fourteen commentaries on major documents; and Part Three focuses on broad themes, including the future of Catholic social teaching and the shortcomings and questions that future generations must address.
