Congress Honors the Life of Slain Catholic Nun

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution today sponsored by Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH) honoring the life and ministry of Sister Dorothy Stang, a Roman Catholic nun from Dayton, Ohio. Stang was known in Brazil as the "Angel of the Amazon", where she advocated land reform and ministered to Brazil's rural peasant workers until her murder on February 12th of this year. Her killing sparked protests among Brazil's landless peasants and prompted Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to open a federal investigation into her death. Three suspects were taken into custody.

Stang, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, was murdered in a remote section of Brazil's Amazon rain forest as she traveled with a group of peasants to meet with local farmers to discuss land reform.

"Sister Dorothy Stang died a martyr for a noble cause and I'm grateful that Congress has chosen to honor her life and commitment to those in need," said Congressman Ryan. "She gave her life to protect the downtrodden and forgotten. Her brutal murder shows the great challenge we face in the pursuit of social justice, but her life shows the extraordinary power one human being has to change the world."

According to Brazilian authorities, Stang recited Bible verses to her killers before she was shot multiple times in the face. Her death came less than one week after she accused loggers and ranchers of threatening to kill rural workers and after receiving death threats herself. A rancher is accused of ordering her killing.

Added Ryan, "I hope that this simple act of commemoration will not be the end of Sister Dorothy's story but the very beginning--that Congress will use this opportunity to demonstrate its concern for inequality and poverty by providing resources and support to the individuals and organizations carrying on her work."

Congressman Tim Ryan, a Catholic, is a member of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus. Ryan's resolution (H.Con.Res. 89) honoring the life of Sister Dorothy Stang had 35 cosponsors and the support of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
