CHICAGO, IL (March 12, 2013) - Catholics in Media Associates (CIMA) celebrates its 20th Anniversary in 2013 with a mass and film and television awards ceremony on Sunday, April 14th which will honor the History Channel mini-series The Bible, the motion picture Flight and the 20th Century Fox Television series Bones. “With CIMA celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year, we wanted to do something special, so we’ve moved the event to the Bel-Air Bay Club in Pacific Palisades, CA, and will start the day off with an open-air mass at 10:00AM, before moving inside for a brunch buffet and the awards ceremony,” announced CIMA President Nancy Norton Bevins. Bevins and CIMA Vice-President John Kelly will executive produce the event. The 2013 CIMA Awards Honorary Chairpersons are past CIMA President Jane Abbott and her husband Thomas Abbott.
The 2013 CIMA Board of Directors Award will be presented to The Bible, the History Channel mini-series executive produced by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. The project was conceived by the husband and wife team after watching Cecil B. DeMille's version of The Ten Commandments for the first time since childhood.
In response to the news, The Bible’s Downey and Burnett stated: "We are honored to receive the 2013 CIMA Board of Directors Award for our mini-series ‘The Bible.’ We created this series to honor God and we hope it brings millions of people closer to His Word. Thank you, CIMA for recognizing our efforts." The Bible marks Burnett's first scripted project and the first collaboration of this kind between Burnett and Downey. In addition to Burnett and Downey, executive producers include Richard Bedser, Dirk Hoogstra and Julian P. Hobbs.
The 2013 CIMA Motion Picture Award will be presented to Flight, directed and co-produced by Robert Zemeckis and starring Denzel Washington, with Don Cheadle, Melissa Leo, Bruce Greenwood, Kelly Reilly and John Goodman. Flight stars Denzel Washington as a high-functioning alcoholic who lands a malfunctioning jet with minimal loss of life and injuries. His portrayal gives hope to anyone who struggles with pride and addiction. Flight received two nominations at the 85th Academy Awards: Best Actor (Denzel Washington) and Best Original Screenplay (John Gatins).
The 2013 CIMA TV Award will be presented to the 20th Century Fox Television series Bones. Inspired by the crime novels written by real-life forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs, the series follows Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) as she works with FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and her forensic team to solve mysteries surrounding human remains. An important ongoing dynamic between Brennan and Booth is their disagreement about the roles of science and faith. Where Brennan focuses on the physical evidence, Booth, a practicing Roman Catholic, looks for clues in human behavior and beliefs. Created by Hart Hanson, Bones is a joint production between Josephson Entertainment and Far Field Productions in association with 20th Century Fox Television, and executive produced by Hanson, Stephen Nathan, Ian Toynton and Barry Josephson.
