Free CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE provides solid, nonpartisan resources voters can use to decide their vote for themselves
SAN DIEGO, CA (October 29, 2012) – Election campaigns always get noisy this time of year, especially when the U.S. presidency is at stake – and most especially in those states called the “battleground” in the week before the general election. Candidates crisscross those key states and focus on undecided voters. Their messages, however, don’t necessarily include the unbiased information people need to cast the most informed vote possible.
That’s why the free CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE app is so important.
“We created this app to provide Church teaching on critical issues that affect every voter,” said Fr. John Trigilio, president of the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy, which developed the app. It’s available now for free download to iOS, Android and Windows mobile devices. In any of the app stores, just search CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE.
The app focuses on six vital issues that every citizen – regardless of religious belief – should weigh in casting his or her ballot – Right to Life, Religious Liberty, Sanctity of Marriage, Private Property, Access to Essential Goods, and War & Peace. Information consistent with the teaching Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church offers insight into each issue that is based on solid Catholic principles.
“Our goal – our commitment to the people we serves as priests and deacons – is to educate them on Church teaching they can and should use to form their voting decisions,” Fr. Trigilio continued. “Today, we especially speak to those in the so-called ‘battleground’ states. We encourage them to download the app and use it to filter the noise that is bombarding them during these final days before the Nov. 6 election.”
Depending on the media outlet(s) or other organization(s) voters choose to follow, as many as a dozen states make up the “battleground” for the final week of the campaign. Those states – Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin – are home to slightly less than 29 percent of the total U.S. population and, as a result, 28.6 percent (154) of the 538 total electoral votes.
Theoretically – because only 270 votes are needed to win the U.S. Presidency, either candidate could win the Nov. 6 election without earning one electoral vote from the “battleground.” Reality, however, dictates that the candidate who wins will very likely come away with the most electoral votes from these states.
That’s why they are so important now, and why the campaigns are turning up the volume of their messaging. The CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE gives anyone who downloads it a chance to filter that messaging through appropriate Church teaching.
“I’m grateful that the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy has provided Catholics with a simple, reliable and easy to use voting guide,” said Jay W. Richards, Ph.D., co-author of the New York Times bestseller INDIVISIBLE. “If you want balanced guidance during this election season, I highly recommend that you download this app, use it and tell your friends about it.”
“I found the CCC Voter application simple to use and a good reminder of the issues and priorities we need to take into account as Catholics before we exercise our right and our duty to vote,” said Fr. Peter West, Human Life International’s Vice President of Missions. “I recommend it highly.”
CATHOLIC VOTING GUIDE uses the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) letter Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship and the Vatican Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith’s (CDF) letter Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion (written by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI) as foundations. CCC members designed the App to identify, clarify and prioritize fundamental non-negotiable values that affect every citizen and every human being.
“The Catholic Voting Guide App is a remarkably useful way for Catholics to gauge the issues which are truly important to faithful voters,” said Students for Life of America. “Anyone who seeks to vote with a conscience informed by their Catholic faith and the teachings of the Church should download and use this app.”
