Cardinal Francis George, O.M.I. To Present The Rerum Novarum Awards 2011

CHICAGO, IL (August 23, 2011) - Jorge Ramirez, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor, Dan McLaughlin, Mayor of Orland Park and executive director of the Plumbing Council of Chicagoland, and John McDonough, president and CEO of the Chicago Blackhawks, will be honored at the 2011 Rerum Novarum Awards. Cardinal Francis George, O.M.I. will present the Rerum Novarum Awards at the 21st Annual Seminary Salute to Labor, Business and Government to be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, in the Plumbers' Union Hall.

The Rerum Novarum Awards, presented by St. Joseph College Seminary at Loyola University of Chicago, honor men and women in labor, business and government who have proven outstanding in their support of the following ideals: respect for the dignity of the human being and human labor, the right to organize and the right to a living wage.

Ramirez, being honored with the Rerum Novarum Award for Labor, was elected President of the Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL) in 2010. Ramirez, who is the first Hispanic to head the Federation of Labor, previously served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Chicago area's largest labor organization. Prior to joining the CFL in 2006, Ramirez was elected Vice President and served as Executive Director of Local 1546 of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, which represents 300 unions and more than 500,000 workers.

McLaughlin, receiving the Rerum Novarum Award for Government, began serving as Mayor of Orland Park in 1993. Prior to Mayor, he served eight years as Village Trustee. Dan is a member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and Southwest Conference of Mayors. Dan has brought creative initiatives to Orland Park including the award winning Open Lands Program, the Smart Living Orland Park program, promoting water and energy conservation and green construction, and an extensive Special Recreation Program for individuals with special needs. Money Magazine chose Orland Park as one of the best 100 cities in America. In addition to serving as Mayor, Dan has served as the Executive Director of the Plumbing Contractors Association of Chicago and Cook County since 1992 and added the Plumbing Council of Chicagoland to his responsibilities in 2008.

McDonough, the business honoree, added the title of Chief Executive Officer this past June after originally joining the Blackhawks as Team President in November 2007. Under his guidance, in what Forbes Magazine has called the "The Greatest Sports-Business Turnaround Ever," the Blackhawks have revitalized their team's profile and re-energized its fan base. Under McDonough's direction, the Blackhawks achieved a Stanley Cup championship in 2010, the team's first title since 1961. Prior to joining the Blackhawks, McDonough was a part of the Chicago Cubs operation for 24 years (1983-2007). During his tenure, the Cubs won the 2007 National League Central Division while setting an all-time franchise attendance record. McDonough is also know for creating the celebrity "guest conductor" 7th inning stretch concept at Wrigley Field and the annual Cubs Convention.

St. Joseph College Seminary's Annual Seminary Salute to Labor, Business and Government, featuring the presentation of the Rerum Novarum Awards, includes a cash raffle, cocktail hour and traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner. Tickets are available in tables of 10 at $2,000 per table or individually for $200 per person. Benefactor Tables of ten can also be purchased at $2,500 each, which includes preferred seating and special recognition in the evening's program.
