The robot revolution is troubling enough with its anticipated impact on jobs. But there may be an even greater problem on the horizon. People are likely to fall in love with their robots.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - What happens when your spouse starts spending too much time with an anatomically correct machine? Divorce for one. No more children for another. And where it goes form there is anyone's guess. These are among the risks that come with the explosion of lifelike robots designed explicitly for sex and emotional interaction.

Within the next year, the first robot sex toys will be released. One U.S. based company that makes sex dolls is about to come out with a robot head that can be attached to its dolls. It will be capable of interacting verbally and asking questions. You can imagine the rest.

Several firms are racing to release the most realistic sex dolls imaginable. At the same time, other firms are working on emotional intelligence, ways to make robots and artificially intelligent assistants that can react to emotional cues. Naturally, a robot that can sense your mood will be able to tailor its approach to accomplish a goal with greater efficiency.

For example, a robotic coworker -and yes, they are coming, that can sense your frustration in your voice can change the way it interacts with you to deescalate the situation and remain productive. This is a critical skill for robots to learn since humans that work next to them will be keenly aware of their own impending replacement.

The notion that humans will fall in love with robots is a staple of science fiction. However, it's very easy to imagine. Robots are faster and more precise, so a robot that decodes your emotions can deliver precise responses intended to elicit preferred reactions from you. Imagine when you meet the first robotic salesperson that can say everything to charm you into making a purchase.

Now imagine when you meet the perfect robot lover who can say everything to seduce you.

Most people, we imagine, will have the sanity and capacity to distinguish between a machine filled with silicon chips and genuine human interaction. But we also live in a world where people literally fall romantically in love with cars (see: mechanophilia).

There are some serious moral problems too. For example, men who buy robot lovers may begin to see women as property. The use of robots for sex is immoral by all measures used by the Church.

Why are these things being invented? There are no good answers other than entrepreneurs see a market for robots as sex toys and domestic servants. The industry would be worth billions or even trillions of dollars.

More sinister theories suggest the robots are coming to diminish birth rates. It is no secret the Davos men, the hundreds of ultra-wealthy who rule the world, agree the planet is overpopulated. And with the coming of robots, they see little need for the rest of humanity. Diminishing the population by creating sex robots is one way to start the process.

No matter what, the robots offer many amazing things, such as removing much of the drudgery from our daily lives. It will be nice not having to worry about driving anymore. However, there is a dark side to this progress that puts everything into question. What good is it if we have robots to do everything for us and we lose our humanity in the process?
