LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - The world's first commercially available robotic chef is coming in 2018 and it can cook gourmet meals and clean up after itself. All you have to do is provide the ingredients, which conveniently will arrive pre-packaged.

The technology for such a device has existed for some time, the problem has been how to incorporate it into a single, practical unit. That unit now exists thanks to Moley Robotics, which has announced its first robotic chef.

The device does not look like the kind of robot you would expect. Instead, it is a pair of arms which extend down from an overhead panel to a dedicated stovetop. The owner uses pre-packaged meals, inputs the number of portions and their sizes, and the robot does the rest. After it's done, it cleans up.

The website features the robot with its two robotic arms preparing food the same as a human would, crumbling cheese onto spaghetti.

The machine is capable of learning new recipes. World renown chefs and everyday users will be able to share their recipes online for your robot to learn and prepare. You will even be able to choose your meal in advance and have it ready when you arrive home.

The robot is referred to as the Moley Kitchen, and it is presently being crowdfunded.

There are probably limitations since the product will be a first generation consumer model. For example, in a video demonstrating a prototype, it appears to come with plates and utensils for cooking. What happens if you wish to cook for eight instead of four? Another prototype shows what appears to be a small dish rack, but how will the machine clean really tough dishes? How will the plate presentations look?

It's a little unclear what will be up to the robot and what is up to you. Nonetheless, even if you are responsible for plating, serving and cleanup, you're still off the hook for preparation. Imagine being able to request a meal and continue about your routine while your Moley Robot minds the stove.

In the future, many routine jobs will be automated. A lot of drudgery will be saved. Among those jobs is the responsibility to cook and clean. Few people enjoy these chores and wherever there is a complaint, there is also a business opportunity. For some people, relief from these chores will be worth the price.

In time, such systems will become commonplace, even standard in the home. They will also become commonplace in restaurants. The need for human chefs will decline to the point that cooking will be a specialty art practiced by those who enjoy it. The rest of us will enjoy gourmet food prepared virtually by our new favorite world class chef.
