CEO sees declining sales as 'a speed bump'

Tech giant Apple has sold 39.3 million iPhones over the past quarter, which includes sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus which were released in the United States on September 19.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Sales of the iPhone rose past most expectations, and were actually up 16% from this time last year.

Apple usually boasts big numbers during quarters where it releases a new product, but Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, said that he thinks the iPhone can continue to grow in future quarters.

"There's a fairly large opportunity in people buying their first iPhone ever," he said while talking with investors. "I've never felt so great after a launch before."

More unusually, Apple hit record sales with 5.5 million Macs this quarter, up 21% from this time last year.

Sales of personal computers continue to shrink, and now Apple controls the largest share of the PC market it has ever had since 1995.

"The back to school season voted and the Mac won," Cook said. "If you went to a lot of college campuses, you'd see a lot of new MacBooks."

Apple also sold 12.3 million iPads, another disappointing quarter for the Apple tablet. Sales of the tablet have been shrinking for three quarters, and sales are down 13% from last year.

Cook said that part of the reason for the decrease in sales is that customers use iPads longer than they use their iPhones, and are not as prone to upgrade as soon as a new device is released.

Cook said he is still confident that Apple can grow in the tablet market. In early October, Apple released two new tablets, the iPad Air 2 and a new iPad mini.

"I view it as a speed bump, not a huge issue," he said. "That said, we want to grow. We don't like negative numbers on these things."
