LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to CNN's timeline, over the past two years the Islamic State has been more active than the period between 2004, when al-Qaeda was established, to the creation of ISIS in 2013.

The 2015 Global Terrorism Index reported 42 international groups are believed to have offered to support or have pledged affiliation to ISIS. While some of the groups have been self-sufficient for years, some are merely small gangs inspired by the perceived power the Islamic State holds.

Some groups have offered support by sending fighters to the Middle East while others simply offer symbolic associations.

Dr. Christina Schori Liang, from the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, told Mail Online that ISIS was just a brand other groups wanted to be associated with.

Of the Islamic State, Liang said: "They appear to others to be very high performance and this increases their legitimacy. If one market dries up they always have others they fall back upon and other terrorist groups can see that.

"It offers these groups global recognition that they are part of one of the most effective terrorist organisations in the world. It's just the idea that they're part of a greater social movement."

Dr. Liang expressed concerns over the several groups that have already pledged allegiance to the extremist group, stating that the different organizations may begin to operate like a multinational company.

"It's kind of like a mafia organisation," she explained. "Everyone has their own business and if they co-operate more I can see them extending their businesses to one another - so it could enrich them even further. I think of ISIS as always looking for new markets. They may not necessarily get into the [other groups'] market, but will take a piece of the cut."

To put things into perspective, Boko Haram was named the deadliest terror group last month. The organization's leader, Abubakar Shekau, pledged allegiance to ISIS earlier this year in March, and has since killed thousands.

Unsurprisingly, seven groups in the Middle East have joined forces with the extremist group or have been overtaken by them. Chechnya, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Palestine all contain ISIS supporters.

Southern Russia, groups throughout the Philippines, Malaysia, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria, Mali and Tunisia also have groups dedicated to ISIS and have been engaged in spreading terror in their regions, while more and more young Americans have been leaving to join the terrorist nation.
