LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - No, this isn't a disturbing movie plot; it's really happening.
According to Express and Daily Mail, a 19-foot-wide, eight-mile-high barbed wire fence along Greece and Macedonia's border has effectively sealed off the smaller country.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported 131,045 migrants have arrived in 2016 alone and has resulted in the necessity for EU officials to give Athens Ł375million on Wednesday for sheltering 100,000 refugees.Other emergency funding from humanitarian groups has helped but is nowhere near enough. Meanwhile, tensions keep rising between border control officials and refugees.
Macedonia was forced to use tear gas on a crowd of migrants on Monday, prompting the European Commission's spokesman, Margaritis Schinas, to say, "The scenes we just saw are not our idea of managing the crisis."
Apparently, the appropriate method of dealing with the migrant crisis is to close all borders to Greece, effectively forcing the country to become the proverbial sacrificial lamb.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated, "We have come to the time when Greece is likely to be sacrificed."To Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Fico said, "It will be your responsibility because you did not do anything on the Turkish-Greek border."
With migrants pouring into Greece by the thousands, more than 7,000 have been reportedly camping near the country's Macedonia border, which closed after hundreds of migrants attempted to force their way through on Monday.
Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann announced border controls were necessary to stop the "disorganized chaos," then warned Austria could no longer serve as "a waiting room for Germany."
At least 27,000 refugees have found themselves stranded in Greece, with more arriving each day.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel attempted to persuade migrants to stay in Greece, saying, "There are accommodation possibilities in Greece, they should be used by the refugees."
Despite her initial encouragement for an open-border policy, Merkel claimed, "There is not a right for a refugee to say, 'I want to get asylum in a particular country in the European Union.'"
