Thousands of earthworms were observed falling from the sky across the southern part of Norway, which still baffles the scientists. The rare phenomenon was sighted by a Biology teacher Karstein Erstad, as he was skiing in the mountains near Bergen last weekend.

Erstad explained it is not the first time this has happened, as some reports suggested that the phenomenon was observed as early as the 1920s.
"I saw thousands of earthworms on the surface of the snow," Erstad said in an interview with The Local. "When I found them on the snow they seemed to be dead, but when I put them in my hand I found that they were alive."
He initially thought that the earthworms crawled through the snow, however he easily dismissed that after noting that the ice was too deep in the mountains, estimated half-meter thick.
With his reports of the bizarre phenomenon, other people said that they had observed the same thing over places like Molde and Bergen, both south of Norway.
A popular theory on random animal rain, the worms may have been lifted up by a strong violent air pocket but then brought them miles back down, in the report by the Independent UK.

Water spouts were being looked at by another theory in which it picks up vegetation, debris and small animals due to its tornado-like movement. Then, the picked up components will be blown away by themselves.
The phenomenon, although uncommon, is not an isolated case in Norway. Similar cases were reported in 2011 at a Scottish Academy secondary school. A group of students with their teacher had to take cover during a football game, only to find out that it was raining worms.
