Thomas More College Of Liberal Arts: Academically Strong, Fully Faithful

Unapologetic fidelity to the Magisterium

Many Catholics are intent on receiving a fruitful education centered on Christ and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church he founded, that they may live productive lives as friends of God, and shape society according to the divine plan of our Redeemer. Simply, they see the purpose of their life as one of love for Truth and fidelity to God and his Church.Thomas More College has the power to change the world.

MERRIMACK, NH (Catholic Online) - It was Abraham Lincoln who said, "Without the assistance of the Divine Being . . . I cannot succeed. With that assistance, I cannot fail." At present, however, many of our leaders show little or no concern for obtaining the assistance of God, for fidelity to God and his truth is often undermined by a relativistic, autonomous view of life, in which truth and reality are thought to be merely pliable, subjective concepts easily bent here and there for one's own purposes. How often, in a culture which idolizes fiscal and consumerist issues, success is defined not by one's friendship with God, not by living a quiet, ascetic life of love and gospel values, but rather by a frenzied labor of peril which daily raises a structure, built upon what is false and doomed to collapse upon itself.

Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, during his address at the first session of the 15th symposium for the Canon Law Association of Slovakia, observed that many in the U.S. are indifferent to a process taking place within our country which "social scientists like to call "secularization" - but which, in practice, involves repudiating the Christian roots and soul of our civilization."

Yet not all are indifferent to what is a malignant desire to empty the soul of our nation, stripping her of her Christian foundation in order to construct an impoverished city which is opposed to God. There are many Catholics and other Christians who realize the precious, invaluable worth of truth, and who understand the real treasure contained in the human intellect created in God's image and likeness, an intellect that draws its nourishment and builds its knowledge on the Foundation of Wisdom, Jesus Christ, who is the Source of intellectual light, and who is the Life-Blood of the Catholic Church.

Those Catholics who understand that the supreme purpose of the human intellect is to seek out and learn the truth about God, are well aware of the priceless value of a proper education which is grounded in the fullness of truth as the Catholic Church alone transmits to the nations. Intellectual knowledge which is devoid of God's revelation as it is carefully passed on to the faithful by the Church is an impairment, a hindrance to true human freedom, and often sets one on a path toward disorder, increasing an individual's susceptibility to the various errors of our age. As an effective antidote to these errors, many Catholics are intent on receiving a fruitful education centered on Christ and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church he founded, that they may live productive lives as friends of God, and shape society according to the divine plan of our Redeemer. Simply, they see the purpose of their life as one of love for Truth and fidelity to God and his Church. In diligently living out such a sacred purpose, they are led to Catholic educational institutions such as the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts.

Unapologetic Fidelity To The Magisterium

Wise Catholics understand that fidelity to the living Magisterium (teaching office of the Church) is a crucial aspect of their faith, for it is contrary to the tenets of logic to claim love for Christ yet live in willful dissent against the authoritative teaching of his Bride. At Thomas More College, students find a true, unwavering and dedicated love for the Church. The Thomas More College website openly attests that "Thomas More College is dedicated to forming students within the Catholic intellectual tradition and with unapologetic fidelity to the Magisterium."

Those who choose Thomas More College of Liberal Arts for their educational goals often share what may be described as a countercultural view of society and the world. That is, in a vision of profound clarity, they see the Church as God's plan for the world. This plan is the plan; not, rather, merely a secondary or alternative plan. In fact, the Church is the divine plan for all people, in all places, in every state of life. When we understand that the Church was born from the blood and water which flowed from Christ's side, a life-giving sacrifice on the cross for his Church, the light begins to flood in, revealing the tremendous importance of the Church as a sacrament of salvation which transforms nations and people, building up the Body of Christ. It is precisely the realization of such a truth that leads students to Thomas More college.

In embracing the truth of the Church, "the Trustees, Administrators, Faculty, and Staff of the College all pledge unreserved fidelity to the Catholic Faith and undivided loyalty to the local ordinary, the Bishop of Manchester, and to the Vicar of Christ, our Holy Father the Pope." As a result, "the College joyfully finds its identity in the task of communicating the whole truth about man and God and, therefore, most especially ...

Any Catholic University that does not use the "Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition" as a TEXT by first or second year students, leaves young people to the personal intrepretations, and possible errors - of any individual teacher.
The CCC keeps us: free from our own error, free from the errors of others, and free from purposeful errors of "enemies within" the Church.
Ave Maria University in FL uses the CCC by students as a TEXT.

An excellent article concerning the need for Catholic Education. There is an enormous amount of ignorance today, even among Catholics, regarding the teaching of the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, many of our Universities that "profess" to be "Catholic" are not upholding the teaching authority of the Church. As F.K. Bartels indicates, a truly "Catholic" University will embrace all the tenets of "Ex Corde Ecclesiae." The last I knew, out of all the Catholic Universities in the USA, there are only about 30 that actually hold to the requirements of "Ex Corde Ecclesiae." Some, if not all of these Universities also provide a program of study for a Master's Degree in Theology for "non-traditional" students. Studies in the classroom may be just once a month over an entire weekend every month during every semester; the rest of what would be class-time consists of required home study, including writing papers to be graded and take home exams, etc.... Most of the students work; some are raising families. It is a wonderful opportunity to become better equipped to help other Catholics understand their Catholic faith. Over the years, I have read probably a hundred books, most being Catholic classics by the saints and other renowned Catholic authors over the centuries. I thought I was going back to school to become "qualified" to help others understand more about what the Church teaches. I found that I was the first to be enriched by the experience! Much of the problems of the laity that we see today in the Church are due to ignorance. We have two generations of Catholics now, most of whom have not been properly taught the Catholic faith. No wonder they do not "adhere" to Catholic teaching in matters of faith and morals! The anti-Christian culture that now surrounds us is caught up in secularism, hedonism, and materialism; our old enemies, the world, the flesh and the devil are "alive and well!" The message of our Lady of Fatima is more pertinent than ever: pray, say the rosary, and do penance....Indeed, little children understand all this best... and it is of huge importance that our children are properly catechized--But, Jesus also calls us adults to "be converted and become like little children...." We all need to at least study the Catechism of the Catholic Church, to get into the shape we need to be in--in order to adhere to it! Need I say that our Catholic Faith is our greatest treasure? Through it we come to know Jesus, the Way the Truth and the Life and His Will for us, as expressed in the BIble, the Catechism, and the teaching authority of the Church. There is no greater happiness on this earth than to walk in the Truth--with Jesus Christ in His Church!
