Fr. Elias on the solemnity of the Birth of St. John the Baptist preaches on how St. John was the first in so many ways. His feast was one of the first feasts to be celebrated  in the Church. He was the first to be sanctified by the presence of the Lord while still in his mother's the womb, the first to carry out the prophetic role of the Church in that He was the first to preach the coming of the Lord and the kingdom of God. He was the first to give his life in this witnessing. In this Year of Faith we especially need to follow the Baptist giving witness to the Truth that liberates and enlightens the world. Ave Maria!
