Capuchins Celeberate 100th Anniversary in Burlingame

BURLINGAME, CA (October 15, 2010) - A century of service by the Capuchin Franciscan friars in the Western America Province was celebrated in Burlingame and surrounding communities this past weekend with multiple events and festivities, ending with a charity golf tournament on Monday.
Fr. Michael Mahoney, OFM Cap, Pastor of Our Lady of Angels Parish, kicked off the celebration weekend with a 100th Anniversary Dinner and Dance on Saturday evening at Our Lady of Angels Parish. The parish, consisting of over 2000 parishioners, hosted a gala event highlighting Capuchin students who are currently in religious formation and attending the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.
"It is vital that we also celebrate what the next century of service will bring us. These young men in religious formation are our future. Our expanding mission in Mexico and service to those most in need will present tremendous new challenges for this next generation of Capuchins. Their education is essential for them to serve and provide leadership needed for the future work of our Province. The celebration of our founding Irish Capuchins and Centennial milestone is not the culmination of a job well done...it is symbolic of the commitment to what we still need to do," Fr. Michael remarked.

Celebration activities continued on Monday as local business representatives and parishioners participated in a charity golf tournament, supporting the work of the Capuchins. For 100 years the friars have extended outreach that now assists 1000s of families in Northern, Central and Southern California as well as in Northern Mexico, including provisions for food, shelter, and clothing for those most in need.
First Republic Bank representatives welcomed and gave sponsor gifts to golf participants as they arrived at Green Hills Country Club in Millbrae. Major sponsors ($5,000 & up) included local businesses such as Crosby-N. Gray & Co. Funeral Home, Concur -Employee Spend Management Services, and Insurance Leadership Network.
Tournament Co-Chair Bill Mason stated, "Burlingame is extremely grateful for the presence of the Capuchins in our community. Their dedication to education, helping the poor in spirit and in need, along with outreach to our friends across the border, is an inspiration to all of us. Their personal vow to poverty while serving others causes us to call upon ourselves to do more. This charity golf tournament is one way we can join them in support of their mission and outreach programs."
