310 ORPHANS IN SOUTHWEST UGANDA SPONSORED BY UAOCF
Ugandan Bishop in Los Angeles to Report on Progress of AIDS Orphans Program

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 13, 2010) - One catholic family in Los Angeles is doing more than reading about the AIDS crisis in Africa - they have taken on the sponsorship of 20 children through the Uganda AIDS Orphan Children Foundation (UAOCF). Bishop Callist Rubaramira from the Diocese of Kabale in Uganda, and chairman of the Kabale Diocese Orphans and Vulnerable Children Project (KDOVCP) is visiting Los Angeles in July. He will meet with Keith and Cecelia Albi, sponsors of 20 children, and with other sponsors who have made it possible for these vulnerable children to stay in school, to receive adequate nutrition and shelter, and to obtain medical care. Besides our individual sponsors, several foundations have supported children. The De Miranda Foundation is supporting 160 children. We have also received support from the Northrop Grumman Employees Charity Organization and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

The UAOCF is a 501(c)(3) public charity. It was founded on a shoestring in 2003 by Fr. Fred Byaruhanga, Ph.D., from Uganda while studying at UCLA. Since then, UAOCF has grown to support 310 children in foster homes. All of these children have lost one or both parents to AIDS. With a generous grant from the .. Holy Childhood Association of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we have refurbished an existing building to serve as a vocational school. Our primary aim is to give the children a good education so they can become self-sufficient and responsible community members. All the children have been moved from primitive village schools to respected boarding schools. School consists of three trimesters per year, and the children return to their foster homes between terms.

If you would like to support a child, the needed donation is $350 per year. We will send you their photograph and a profile of their background and you can correspond with them. We welcome donations in any amount, which can be designated to be used for foster home care, medical care, education expenses, or our general operating fund.
