IPS Presents 'Psychology of the Body,' 2011-12 Newman Lectures

Arlington, VA (September 13, 2011) - The Institute for the Psychological Sciences (IPS), a groundbreaking Catholic graduate school of psychology, presents its 11th Annual Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman Lecture Series beginning September 30, 2011, entitled Psychology of the Body.

This year's series explores the tendency in today's post-modern culture to either over- or under-value the importance of the body for the person and his or her relationships. Such attitudes generate a myriad of important questions about the practical and theological approaches to the body which our speakers will address.

This interdisciplinary series invites an anti-reductionist focus on the body as a window to the psyche or spiritual soul: not reducing all mankind to the person, nor the person to the mind, nor the mind to the body, nor the body to its neurons and behavior. Rather, it offers reflections at these different levels in order to contribute to a robust psychology of the body.

"This year's series on Psychology of the Body will boldly address the unique testimony the human body renders concerning its unity with the mind and the soul," states Dr. Craig Titus, director of Integrative Studies. "It will mark a clear contrast with our culture's reductionist views by providing a truly catholic and Catholic understanding of the person."

Notable speakers include: University of Notre Dame Law Professor Gerard V. Bradley, J.D.; IPS Professor and Senior Scholar Paul Vitz, Ph.D.; author and teacher Fr. John Bartunek, L.C., S.T.L.; IPS graduate and Clinical Psychologist Greg Kolodziejczak, Psy.D.; Dominican priest Fr. James Brent, O.P.; and IPS faculty members Craig Steven Titus, Ph.D. and G. Alexander Ross, Ph.D.

All lectures will be held at IPS in Classroom II on the first floor, beginning at 4:30 p.m. followed by a wine and cheese reception. The public is invited to attend free of charge but reservations are required.
