NCAA Grants Franciscan University of Steubenville Full Division III Membership

Franciscan University of Steubenville is now a full-fledged member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

STEUBENVILLE, OH (August 12, 2011) - The expected news came in an August 2 letter from Azure Davey, the associate director of Academic and Membership Affairs for NCAA Division III, who said the University had been granted "active membership status effective September 1." Davey also wrote, "Beginning in the 2011-12 academic year, Franciscan will be eligible to participate in NCAA championships."

Full membership will allow Franciscan University full voting privileges at the NCAA Convention concerning NCAA policies and regulations, Davey said.

After a 24-year hiatus, Franciscan University began its quest to return to intercollegiate athletics in the spring of 2005, when the University's Board of Trustees voted unanimously to pursue NCAA Division III athletics.

The NCAA's customary four-year provisional membership period began in fall 2007, and soon thereafter the Franciscan University Barons joined the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, comprised of 10 schools in Pennsylvania, New York, and with the addition of Franciscan University, Ohio.

"This is great news for our student-athletes and coaches, and great news for Baron fans everywhere," said Franciscan University athletic director Chris Ledyard. "I especially want to thank all the people in our community and at the University who have supported our efforts to bring NCAA athletics to Steubenville for the first time in our community's history." Ledyard said.

"We know we are having an impact on the culture of NCAA sports with the high emphasis we place on human and Christian virtues. And we have already fielded teams in cross country and tennis that were conference champions."

For the 2011-12 school year, over 250 Franciscan University student-athletes will be on 13 NCAA teams: women's and men's basketball, women's and men's cross country, women's and men's tennis, women's and men's track and field, women's and men's soccer, women's volleyball, women's swimming and diving, and softball. NCAA Division III student-athletes do not receive athletic scholarships.

Men's rugby, the University's 14th intercollegiate sport, competes in the Allegheny Rugby Union. Women's and men's NCAA lacrosse programs will begin competition as early as the 2012-13 school year.

"Pope John Paul II called sports 'the school of moral values,'" said University President Father Terence Henry, TOR. "We have firmly grounded our program in our late Holy Father's call to evangelize youth and in the formation of the human person as made in the image of God. I am grateful to God for the addition of NCAA athletics to our extracurricular activities. I am proud of our student-athletes, coaches, and Athletic Department staff. Starting from scratch, they put in countless hours to grow the program and meet all NCAA policy and compliance requirements."

David Schmiesing, vice president of Student Life, added his thanks, saying. "We would not be here today without the collaboration and support of many individuals and organizations who helped us move through the exploratory and provisional phases of NCAA membership."

NCAA athletics has enabled Franciscan's Athletic Department to increase its outreach to the local community. Summer sports camps for youth are now offered in soccer, tennis, volleyball, and basketball. The entire community is invited to family-friendly events such as Kloska Community Day, Kuzma Community Night, the Robert D'Anniballe Rugby Ruckus, Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser, and the Kelly Roggensack Memorial Run/Walk.
