Handing hat to Obama, Russia begins to do America's job at the UN

Leading the free world requires backbone and audacity, something our leadership seems to lack.

The Theater of the Absurd continues at the United Nations headquarters in New York as President Obama and Vladimir Putin recite harsh lines at one another over strategy in Syria. Ironically, it is Putin, not Obama, who is calling for UN action against the Islamic State.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Russia is commonly cast as the enemy of the United States in the Theater of the Absurd, hosted by President Obama. However, it remains unclear just why Russia is our enemy. Both the US and Russia seek the elimination of terrorist threats and both nations want stability. Both nations would prefer to resolve differences diplomatically, however it seems only Russia is willing to employ meaningful force when all other options have been extinguished. Obama wants to antagonize Putin.

During his speech at the UN, Putin called for the UN Security Council to pass a resolution authorizing a multi-national effort to dismantle the Islamic State terror network. This call is both fair and right.

Nobody wants war, but the world has war forced upon it by the Islamic State and their apocalyptic Islamic cult. The leaders of that regime actually desire a massive, armed conflict with the world, as they think this will bring about the Islamic apocalypse and usher in paradise.

Such people cannot be reasoned with, no matter how much we'd like to negotiate away our differences. They also practice the most barbaric and inhumane methods for controlling their population, including slavery, human trafficking, mass executions and even genocide.

When a group of people begin to follow such a path, the world has an immediate obligation to intervene, by whatever means necessary, to end the carnage. When the Assad regime complained about the rise of the Islamic State terrorists, they were not believed. For the past year, the world has watched the Islamic State grow. We've witnessed human tragedies that haven't been seen since perhaps WWII.

What's absurd about all this, is Russia, not the United States, is calling for the UN to unite and take action against the terrorists. The obligation to destroy the Islamic State does not belong to the United States or Russia alone, but to the entire civilized world. This may be one of the few, rare cases, when international military intervention is the best course of action.

For his part, Obama spent his time condemning Assad and criticizing Putin's plan to diminish the Islamic State through military means. Obama still thinks a diplomatic solution that focuses on Assad's removal is the most important thing to emphasize right now. This, from the man who once referred to the Islamic State as "Al Qaeda's JV team."

There seems to be consensus that Assad has to go, only Russia is calling for Assad to remain in power. However, he will probably be used as a bargaining chip with Russia eventually sacrificing him in exchange for a long-term presence in the Middle East.

Russia hopes to exert control and influence across the region, and such control could provide a welcome stability. Certainly, US efforts have been counterproductive, as Putin accurately pointed out, citing Iraq and Libya as examples. Both nations are now havens for terrorists.

Anyone who aspires to terror and to enslaving their neighbors must see that such a move will be met forcefully by a united coalition of civilized states. Just as the correct response to a shooting criminal thug is an armed police response, likewise the same applies to the international community.

The Islamic State isn't our job alone, nor Russia's job, but there is a sacred obligation for the world to act. As the supposed "Leader of the Free World" however, Obama should be pleading the case on behalf of victims of slavery and genocide. Instead, it's Putin doing the job.

It is sad to see that our own country has failed to take the Islamic State seriously and still hasn't made the call for the rest of the world to join us in eliminating the genuine threat posed by an Islamic cult. Perhaps the Russians will enjoy more success, unimpeded by the incompetence that seems inherent in the Obama government. How absurd to see that it is Putin, an atheist and former communist, could be the man who brings peace to the Middle East and makes the region safe once again for the millions of Middle Eastern Christians who are threatened with genocide today.
