HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA (Catholic Online) - The Congressman included the pontiff's work on human rights and his advocacy in helping the refugees in Syria as an act deserving of a global honor.
"Pope Francis has been a powerful advocate for peace, urging an end to conflict and support for constitutive ties among nations," Schiff wrote in the letter that he sent to the Nobel committee. "He has called on the world to use diplomacy and discussion to solve disputes, rather than military force, coercion or intimidation. This commitment to nonviolence, which the Pope has put into practice every day through his words and actions, is at the core of the principles behind the Nobel Peace Prize."
The Pope's visit to the United States was speculated to be because of his advocacy to convince the most powerful country in the world to accommodate more refugees as chaos continues to haunt Syria.
It was also speculated that he would address issues about the family, abortion and other pro-life causes. The Pope revealed during his time with the Roman Catholic Bishops of the U.S. that his primary motive in visiting the U.S. was to see if the American Catholic Church was living up to its advocacy in supporting pro-life and family causes.
However, during his private meeting with President Obama held at the Oval Office in the White House, Pope Francis further discussed his views on religious freedom and environmental issues. The U.S. Representative's letter also included the Pope's call to the world to fight against global warming.
In Noble Peace Prize history, no Pope has ever received the award. President Obama was awarded one in 2009, the year he was inaugurated as the President of the United States. He was the very first black president in the history of the U.S.
