LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - President elect Donald Trump won the Catholic vote by 52 percent. This is the first-time Catholic voters have voted for the conservative candidate since 2008. In previous elections, Catholics voted for Obama.

Exit polls show that Donald Trump won 52 percent of the Catholic vote while Hillary Clinton only earned 45 percent. The remaining 3 percent of Catholics voted for a third party candidate.

This election was difficult for Catholics who felt divided by Trump's pro-life position and his rhetoric on various minority groups. Most Catholics emphasized one position over another based on their personal experiences. Some Catholics pledged to vote for Clinton, despite her anti-life positions on several issues.

However, Catholics have an obligation to support life in all cases, particularly in the womb. This issue is so important that many Catholics feel compelled to be single-issue voters. Despite the frustration, the issue really is that important. If we cannot respect life from the moment of conception first, we have little basis for respect subsequently in life.

Other Catholics criticized the Church for speaking out in defense of life during the campaign. They blasted priests and clergy who admonished their parishioners not to cast a pro-abortion ballot. The Church should not be involved in politics, many argued.

However, abortion and the sanctity of human life is not a political issue. It is a moral issue with political ramifications. This distinction is lost on many people. The Church has a duty to speak about moral issues in the public forum. Catholics have the right to expect moral instruction from the Church, and should act with a conscience that is informed by this teaching.

It appears in this case, more Catholics listened.

Now that Trump is elected, we pray he appoints pro-life judges and promotes an end to the taking of innocent human life in the womb. We pray that he be a moral and upright leader and a man of virtue and respect. We may see these qualities during his tenure, or we may not. Either way, we have sent the message that we will not abide the continued killing of our children.

It is reasonable to expect things to get better for the unborn during the next two to four years of Trump's presidency.
