Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Sunday morning, 29-year-old Marine Corps veteran Gavin Eugene Long opened fire.

The attack occurred less than one mile from the Baton Rouge Police Department's headquarters, near a gas station and convenience store.

Long wore black and used an assault rifle to kill 32-year-old Montrell Jackson and two other, currently unnamed, Baton Rouge officers.

According to a recording posted to Broadcastify.com, the shooting was initially reported around 8:40 a.m.

The police radio transmissions revealed an officer stating: "Supposedly a lady came up and there's a subject walking with a coat and an assault rifle out here behind the store."

Seconds after the statement, an officer was heard shouting, "Shots fired, officer down! Shots fired, officer down!  Got a city officer down! Shots fired! Shots fired on Airline!"

Moments later: "I'm hit, I'm right in front of it. By the carwash. I'm hit. Left arm. Argh."

Less than ten minutes later, emergency responders and backup arrived.

Louisiana State Police reported officers then "engaged" Long, resulting in his death at the scene.

Major Doug Cain, a spokesman for the state police, told reporters, "We are not ready to say [Long] acted alone," adding two "persons of interest" were arrested with possible ties to the incident.

Col. Michael D. Edmonson, the superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, later released a statement explaining: "We do believe the person who shot and killed our officers, he is the person that we shot and killed. We don't believe we have any shooters holed up."

According to the Los Angeles Times, investigators discovered Long had a history of unveiled rage aimed at police murdering black men and was intensely interested in black separatism.

Across his social media pages, Long often described violence as the appropriate solution to the blue vs. black battle on the streets.

One pro-violence video Long recorded shows him saying: "One hundred percent of revolutions, of victims fighting their oppressors, from victims fighting their bullies, 100% have been successful through fighting back through bloodshed."

East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid J. Gautreaux III called the country to stop the violence.

"This is not so much about gun control as it is about what is in men's hearts," Gautreaux III explained as he attempted to convince people to set aside their differences.

"If we don't do that, and this madness continues, we will surely perish as a people."
