Rev. Bryant says black-on-black violence is an epidemic

A former leader of the NAACP is blasting Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson for what he calls "exploiting" the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. Rev. C.L. Bryant told the Daily Caller on Monday that "His family should be outraged."

We ask you, humbly: don't scroll away.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Bryant is a conservative and a pastor who headed the Garland, Texas chapter of the NAACP. Bryant called Sharpton and Jackson, "race hustlers" and accused them of "acting as though they are buzzards circling the carcass of this young boy."

Controversy has exploded just a month after George Zimmerman, who is being described in the media as a "neighborhood watch captain" shot and killed Trayvor Martin, in what Zimmerman claims was an act of self-defense.

Zimmerman has not been charged with a crime thanks to Florida law which permits the use of lethal force if a person is reasonably threatened.

Recent developments are suggesting that Martin may have struggled with Zimmerman and police say that Zimmerman did sustain injuries.

The case has inflamed national passions with the majority of Americans via petitions and polls speaking out in favor of Zimmerman's arrest, which has not yet happened. Local police say they have no grounds (yet)on which to arrest Zimmerman.

Meanwhile, as the public firestorm continues public figures are chiming in across the country. Jackson recently said that the killing shows how "blacks are under attack" and adding, the "targeting, arresting, convicting blacks and ultimately killing us is big business."

Bryant says the real epidemic is black-on-black violence, rather than white-on-black. "The epidemic is truly black-on-black crime," Bryant told the Daily Caller. "The greatest danger to the lives of young black men are young black men."

Bryant called upon civil rights leaders to address this issue instead. He asked, "Why not be angry about the wholesale murder that goes on in the streets of Newark and Chicago? Why isn't somebody angry about that six-year-old girl who was killed on her steps last weekend in a cross fire when two gang members in Chicago start shooting at each other? Why is there no outrage about that?"

While famous personalities weighs in on this controversial issue, one must have faith that justice will ultimately be done. In April, a Florida grand jury will investigate the incident, and already the FBI, with its highly trained professionals and sophisticated equipment is also conducting a detailed investigation.

No person can do evil to another and expect to escape justice forever. In the meantime, it is not for us to judge based on hearsay, rumor, and the musings of politicos. Rather, we must keep the faith and ensure we do justice in our daily lives - otherwise we will have learned nothing from this very human tragedy.
