LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- The Venezuelan government has shut down CNN in that country. The order came via CONATEL, the national telecommunications commission. The order was explained thus:
"The procedure is done in light of the content that the mentioned news station has systematically been broadcasting, which presents a clear aggression against the Venezuelan homeland."
The network, which is called CNNE in Venezuela is now entirely off the air in that country. The E stands for "en Espanol."
Apparently, the motivation for the decision was an investigation by the network that revealed the government may be issuing passports and visas to people with ties to terrorism. The claims were made by Misael Lopez, Venezuela's former legal advisor to the embassy in Iraq.
The government fired back quickly, with Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez calling Lopez "a delinquent who tried to steal Venezuela's money." She added, "CNNE started a psychological war, an operation of war propaganda, based on falsehoods."
At the same time the network was booted off the air in Venezuela, Donald Trump was meeting with the opposition leader's wife in Washington. The leader of the opposition in Venezuela, Leopoldo Lope is imprisoned in that country. His wife met with Trump, Pence and Marco Rubio, asking for his release.
President Trump tweeted: "Venezuela should allow Leopoldo Lopez, a political prisoner... out of prison immediately."
The people of Venezuela complained about the loss of the network and the loss of freedom. The socialist government of that country has caused economic chaos and an artificial famine. The nation has one of the highest inflation rates in the world.
