Cuando ya se conoce a las 32 selecciones clasificadas al Mundial Brasil 2014, con el ingreso final de Uruguay tras vencer a Jordania, el Papa Francisco recibió hoy en audiencia privada al presidente de la FIFA, Joseph Blatter, en un encuentro en el que este último entregó al Santo Padre un banderín en el que se reconoce al Pontífice como "Amigo del Fútbol".

VATICANO (ACI) - Blatter obsequió al Papa un banderín con este reconocimiento, una camiseta blanca con el número 10 y un armadillo de peluche, la mascota del Mundial. También le regaló un ejemplar escrito en latín de la nueva revista The FIFA Weekly, que en este número especial incluye, entre otras cosas, un reportaje fotográfico sobre San Lorenzo, el club del que es socio el Pontífice.

Según informó la FIFA en un comunicado, los traductores de la revista tuvieron que recurrir a algunos "trucos" lingüísticos, debido a que ciertos términos, como penal, córner o centrodelantero "todavía no existían en la antigua Roma".

La reunión se dio ocho meses después de la elección del Papa Francisco, momento en el que Blatter, a través de una carta pública, definió al Santo Padre como "un gran apasionado del fútbol y de un equipo apodado La Santa Escuadra".

Para el presidente de la FIFA, la fe y el fútbol tienen semejanzas: "ambos tienen valores en común. El fútbol, como la fe en Dios, puede construir puentes, llevar alegría y esperanza y, sobre todo, unir los pueblos de todo el mundo".
