LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The Holy Door to St. Peter's Basilica is open! This rare event marks the beginning of the extraordinary jubilee Year of Mercy.

A jubilee is a time of extraordinary forgiveness in the Church, established by God and detailed in the Old Testament. During a jubilee year, sins and debts are forgiven. The Catholic Church forgives extraordinary sins, including abortion.

Pope Francis is a pastoral pope. He is most concerned with the daily lives of his people. Rather than discuss doctrine, he concerns himself with the well-being of individuals.

Pope Francis has issued a special plenary indulgence for the jubilee. The indulgence allows for the complete remission of all temporal punishment due to sin.

The permission to forgive sins is a key duty of the Holy Father and comes directly from Christ.

"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven: whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Matt 16:19)

To receive your indulgence, you will need to fulfill the obligations. Please look to the following:

- You must:

Make a full and sincere confession,

Perform penance,

Receive Holy Communion,

And pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.

-The greatest time allowed to get your indulgence is usually just 8 days. Yet, because the risk of sin is significant, and the state of grace is crucial, you should seek your indulgence promptly.

-You may get the indulgence only once per day.

-If you are sick or weak, a confessor may excuse you from certain requirements, such as penance.

-Your indulgence can be used for yourself or offered up for another soul in Purgatory.

-Finally, to obtain your indulgence, you must pass through a Holy Door. Holy doors are open in every diocese and in many key parishes. Each person should ask their priest where they can find such a door.

-People who cannot pass through a Holy Door, such as those who are sick, elderly or in prison, can still obtain their indulgence through faithful meditation.

The Jubilee Prayer from Pope Francis is also recommended. The full text is below.

Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.

 Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money;
 the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.

Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
"If you knew the gift of God!"
You are the visible face of the invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy:
let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.

You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness
in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy,
you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen.
