Every 30 minutes, at least one person in the United States dies because of antibiotic resistant infections. Researchers have now discovered a dangerous gene in the infection of a second person that reveals these microbes are evolving rapidly and may soon evolve beyond all treatment.

LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) - In late May, the second person ever in the United States to carry a specially mutated bacteria was identified. This patient, a woman from Pennsylvania, reported to a hospital with a urinary tract infection that would not go away. Doctors learned the tenacious infection was resistant to all antibiotics. Upon further study, it was revealed the bacteria carried the mcr-1 superbug gene.
That gene makes all bacteria that carry it resistant to the most powerful antibiotics we have, including colistin. Colistin is widely regarded as the last resort in antibiotics. If it does not work, then the patient is at the mercy of their disease.
This is the second time this gene has been found in bacteria in the U.S. Previously it has been found in China. It was first reported in the U.S. in April.
The second case in as many months suggests the gene is already present in the U.S. and the disease may be circulating among people who are unaware they are infected with a killer bacteria.
As best as scientists can tell, the gene evolved in China, where it is also spreading. Eventually, it will spread globally, and kill millions. Intensive care units will soon need to equip to deal with ancient, but deadly infections that can no longer be treated with modern medicine.
Old killers are threatening a return, including tuberculosis. Experts blame the overuse of antibiotics as a major culprit. Another problem is that it can take years to develop a new antibiotic and bring it to market.
Within the next decade, old infections will return to become a major killer of humanity. Already, drug resistant bacteria are killing dozens of people per day in America. Despite this shocking death toll, which equals about 23,000 American per year, the media is paying little attention.
Once a patient becomes ill, there is nothing anyone can do except wait for the end.
