The faith of my Grandmother - Angel Stories

By: Daphne Hebert

Location: Kaplan Louisiana USA

To begin, my grandmother was a devout Catholic and had remarkable faith. When she was a young mother with 5 children, the oldest 13 and the youngest 5, she lost her husband to a stroke. I've been told that the sunday after he was burried, she was in Mass in the front row, where she always sat, with all five children. She never missed a Sunday Mass. Years past by and she never dated or even considered it. She got a job as a cook at an elementary school and eventially became head cook and retired. She raised her children alone. Then in 1995, she was struck again with tragedy. Her youngest son, who was five when her husband died, was killed in a horrific accident at a rice mill. He also had a son, who was five. Yet again, she never steared away from her faith. Never missed a Sunday Mass. Then 2 1/2 years later, her faith was given another test. My big brother, her first born grandson, was killed in a car accident. This was a remarkable woman who never once questioned God as to why some of her most precious blessings were taken away. Again, she never missed mass and her faith grew stronger and stronger. I always admired her faith in God and wished I could be like her. On February 18, God took her home. She passed away peacfully in her sleep with a rosary in her hand. She said it every night until she fell asleep. A few weeks before her death I was really questioning the catholic beliefs I was taught my whole life and considering another religon. I knew that if I would ever switch religons it would of broken her heart. I had been praying for God to pull me closer to him and help me to be more like her. A few days before she died, I had made up my mind to attend another church (Baptist) in search of more fullfillment. On that Saturday morning I received a call from my mom (her daughter) that my beloved grandmother was dead. I trully believe now that prayer is so powerful and they are really answered. They may not be answered in the way we like but it opened my eyes. I have since then
been attending mass regulary and trying to live my life as a good Christian. Her death has brought me closer to God. I will never consider another religon again. The thing that kept me from changing religons was her. She was a beautiful person and loved us so much. It has changed my life in more ways than one. She will be missed by so many people. I know now my life path will take a major turn. I want to see her again someday.
