House speaker says 'it was time for us to take a stand' for him and his fellow Republicans

House Speaker John Boehner says that he willingly joined with fellow Republicans to stand against funding health care reform. "I and my members decided that the threat of Obamacare and what was happening was so important that it was time for us to take a stand. And we took a stand," the Ohio Republican on ABC's "This Week" this past weekend.

'You've never seen a more dedicated group of people who are thoroughly concerned about the future of our country,' Boehner said of House Republicans. 'It is time for us to stand and fight.'

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - While he was offered a clean government funding bill to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) over the summer, Boehner stood firm. "There was a conversation about doing this ... several.

"I, working with my members, decided to do this in a unified way," the speaker said -- with demands to delay or otherwise alter the Affordable Care Act.

"You know, working with my members, they decided, let's do it now," he said. "And the fact is, this fight was going to come, one way or another. We're in the fight. We don't want to shut the government down. We've passed bills to pay the troops. We passed bills to make sure the federal employees know that they're going to be paid throughout this."

"You've never seen a more dedicated group of people who are thoroughly concerned about the future of our country," he said of House Republicans. "It is time for us to stand and fight."

Earlier, Boehner had criticized the Obama administration's plan to disable a key part of its health overhaul Web site this weekend to resolve glitches that overwhelmed the launch of new health insurance markets.

"The news that its enrollment system is already going offline confirms that the launch of the president's health care law has been an unmitigated disaster," Boehner said Friday.

The department did not release a schedule for hours of operation, but a spokeswoman said the site would be taken down at 1 a.m. EDT each night for a few hours.

Boehner was harshly critical of the White House for dismissing the technical problems as glitches and not disclosing how many Americans were able to sign up for plans using the "fatally-flawed system.

"This announcement is more proof that we need to delay the law and provide basic fairness, just as Republicans have called for. How can this administration tax individuals for not purchasing a product from a Web site that doesn't even work?," Boehner said in the statement.
