LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - A federal Parks police helicopter landed on the Mall directly in front of the building and quickly evacuated the wounded officer.
The name of the female suspect was not immediately known. The shooting started, officials said, when she tried to breach security at the White House was chased in her black Infiniti by police to the Capitol.

Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania told reporters he was walking from the Capitol to the Senate Russell Office Building across the street when he noticed several police officers speeding their motorcycles up Constitution Avenue.

"Within seconds of that," Casey said, "We heard three, four, five pops," which he assumed were gunshots. Police ordered Casey and nearby tourists to crouch behind a car for protection.

A warning was sounded, and the House abruptly went into recess and lawmakers left the chamber floor. The Senate also suspended business. Lawmakers had been working to find common ground to end a government shutdown prior to the situation. The House had just finished approving legislation aimed at partly lifting the government shutdown by paying National Guard and Reserve members.

People standing outside the Supreme Court across the street from Congress were hurried into the court building by authorities and the White House was quickly locked down. The stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the compound was closed to pedestrians.
