Engraved Third century glass found in Spain shows beardless Christ wearing a philosopher's toga

The popular depiction of Jesus Christ in Western art usually shows him with flowing, long blond hair and beard. This depiction may not necessarily be the case. Archaeologists in Spain say they have found one of the world's earliest known images of Jesus clean-shaven and wearing a philosopher's robe.

Throughout history, the Messiah has been depicted in a variety of ways through holy art -- bearded, clean shaven, light skin, olive skin, long hair, short -- each interpretation reflecting the prevalent society's ideas regarding Him.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The depiction is engraved on a glass plate dating back to the Fourth Century A.D., according to reports. He is flanked by two apostles, believed to be Peter and Paul.

Jesus in this instance looks very different from later depictions. Beardless, with short, curly hair and is wearing what appears to be a philosopher's toga.

The plate is believed to have been used to hold Eucharistic bread as it was consecrated in early Christian rituals.

It measures 22 centimeters in diameter and fragments of it were unearthed by scientists. The find was discovered inside a religious building in the ancient town of Castulo in Andalusia, southern Spain.

Marcelo Castro, head of the FORVM MMX excavation project says that the building was built in the second half of the fourth century A.D. and abandoned about a century later.

The find has made scientists "review the chronology of early Christianity in Spain," FORVM MMX project director Marcelo Castro told El Mundo newspaper.

The pieces were in an excellent state of preservation. Eighty-one percent of its original area has now been pieced together by scientists.

"The scene takes place in the celestial orb, framed between two palm trees, which in Christian iconography represent immortality, the afterlife and heaven, among other things," ABC writes.
