Called the Azzam, $609 million ship is the size of two football fields

The world's longest private yacht, the Azzam made its maiden voyage last week from a shipyard in Bremen, Germany. At 590-feet long, the luxury private vessel is also among the fastest and can sail at 34.5 miles per hour. Mysteriously, the person who commissioned the yacht remains unknown.

If the Azzam is anything like The Eclipse, which boasts a helicopter landing pad, Movie Theater, beauty salon and gym, the yacht is sure to have a variety of luxurious appointments.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Designed by Nauta Yachts in Italy and constructed by German company Lürssen Yachts, the $609 million yacht is almost two football fields long. Four years were needed to complete its construction.

At 590-feet long and a beam 68-foot wide, the Azzam overshadows previous longest super-yacht, The Eclipse, by 57 feet. Launched in 2010, the Eclipse belongs to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovish, owner of the popular English soccer team Chelsea Football Club.

Though the person who commissioned the Azzam is still a mystery, there is speculation that the owner may be a member of the Saudi royal family. The person gave engineer Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi instructions on what he wanted.

If the Azzam is anything like The Eclipse, which boasts a helicopter landing pad, Movie Theater, beauty salon and gym, the yacht is sure to have a variety of luxurious appointments.

In construction for four years, Milan-based Nauta Yachts designed the Azzam for a year and Lürssen Yachts in Germany constructed the behemoth private vessel in three years.

"His brief was to build a large luxury yacht with an innovative and timeless design that would be able to travel at high speed in warm and shallow waters, whilst providing luxurious and sophisticated accommodation to its guests," according to superyachts.com.

The Azzam, which launched on Friday, will be delivered to its mystery owner later in 2013.

"When she will be delivered later this year, she will have been in build for only three years following one year of engineering," Peter Lürssen, managing partner of Lürssen Yachts says. "She truly represents another milestone in not only our history but yachting history as well."
