LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Presumed dead by her attackers, the girl regained consciousness and managed to dig her way out of the muddy grave. She flagged down a passerby where she was taken to a medical clinic.

The girl's father, Siddique Mughal told local police that his daughter had been abducted. They initially refused to investigate the incident, but were ordered to arrest the girl's alleged attackers by the Lahore High Court Chief Justice's Complaint Cell.

A judge from the Toba Tek Sing area, where the attack took place, has also been asked to investigate the matter.

The sessions judge subsequently directed police to take steps to arrest the rapists, complete their investigation and submit a report to the court without any delay.

Child rape is a growing problem in Pakistan. According to Pakistani children's charity Sahil, the number of children raped between 2002 and 2012 increased from 668 to 2,788.

Cultural myths persist such as HIV positive men believing they can be cured through sex with a virgin.

Statistic show cases of child rape have risen from 668 in 2002 to 2,788 last year, according to the International Business Times.

"We still think these statistics are just a fraction of what's going on," Sanihl's executive director Manizeh Bano says.

One of the most notorious cases occurred in 2007, when the then 13-year-old Kainat Soomro was attacked by four men. Shunned by her village after speaking out against her attackers and was labeled a "kari" or "black virgin."

Kainat's own family was ordered to kill her to rid themselves of shame, they stood by her despite threats of violence against them.

Despite her quest for justice, her alleged attackers were eventually acquitted.
