Homosexuality is forbidden in Muslim nation, punishable to two to 10 years in prison

The Southeast Asian nation of Pakistan is rigidly Muslim and has little access to the modern world. If and when a Pakistani man gets online, however, chances are he's looking for some homosexual pornography. Despite being a society that loudly denounces homosexuality, Pakistan tops the list of Goggle searches for sites involving man-on-man sex.

The fundamentalist Muslim nation of Pakistan forbid homosexuality, yet leads the world in Internet online searches for gay pornography.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Surprisingly, the most Internet searches for gay sex acts came from the conservative stronghold of Peshawar, in lieu of major cities such as Lahore and Karachi, according to analysis of Google trends by Mother Jones.

Pakistan was given a rating of 100 by the search engine for having the highest search traffic for the pornography terms. It's disconcerting, considering that homosexuality is illegal in Pakistan and carries a sentence of two to 10 years in prison if caught.

To back these facts up, the Pew Research Center has released figures for countries that are most tolerant --and intolerant of homosexuality from a survey of 39 countries.

According to the poll, only two percent of Pakistanis surveyed said "yes" to the question: "Should society accept homosexuality?"

Other countries that showed a low tolerance for homosexuality included Nigeria, with one percent approval, Tunisia at two percent, while Ghana, Senegal, Egypt, Jordan and Indonesia showed only three percent approval.

The European country of Spain showed the highest acceptance of homosexuality at 88 percent, followed by Germany at 87 percent, the Czech Republic and Canada at 80 percent, Australia at 79 percent, France at 77 percent and Britain at 76 percent.

One expert on Pakistani minorities says that highly observant Muslim men are known to have physical relationships with other men - but do not consider themselves gay.

"The real love they can have that most of us find with a partner, they find with men," said former Pakistani politician Farahnaz Ispahani, now at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. "They mostly see their wives as the mother of their children."

She said an increase in religious extremism could explain the popularity of gay porn.

"Hindus are being forced to convert, Christians are being burned alive - there's very little personal safety for those seen as 'the other.' So what do [gay Pakistanis] do? They turn to pornography because they can't live their lives openly."
