LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Billboards have been created to smell like human sweat while simultaneously shooting out carbon dioxide to attract, trap and kill mosquitoes.
Prototypes have been installed across the Zika-infested country of Brazil in what health officials hope will prevent more health hazards.
Each billboard can attract mosquitoes within a 2.5 mile radius and wafts a solution of lactic acid and carbon dioxide - the smell of human sweat and breath.
The billboards also have fluorescent lights to make the boards even more enticing. When the mosquito touches the panel, it becomes stuck and is sucked down to the bottom, where it is unable to escape and eventually dies of dehydration.
Each board kills over 100 mosquitoes each day, which officials hope will stem the flow of Zika outbreaks.
A spokesman told Daily Mail the billboards will most likely be present in the cities hosting the Olympic games and will have advertisements for Olympic sponsors.
If the boards are a continued success, they can be placed anywhere from areas fraught with mosquito-related illnesses to general areas, such as hotel balconies.
Technical blueprints and a downloadable project design are available online for anyone who wishes to replicate the billboards.
