Nigerian terrorist group, Boko Haram has issued a provocative threat against Cameroonian President Paul Biya. In a video recently posted on YouTube, the leader of Nigerian Islamist group, Abubakar Shekau, threatened Biya to carry out attacks in Cameroon similar to those in Nigeria.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau is shown here threatening Cameroonian President Paul Biya in a YouTube video posted on January 5.
ALGIERS, ALGERIA (Catholic Online) - "Paul Biya, if you do not put an end to your evil plan you'll be entitled to the same fate as Nigeria. Your soldiers can do nothing against us," Shekau said in Arabic in the 17-minute video posted earlier this week.
The looming threat posed by Boko Haram has extended far past the borders of Nigeria. Boko Haram has taken control of the military base in far northeastern Nigeria, on the shores of Lake Chad. The move gives the group advantage to wage attacks in Cameroon.
Attacks by jihadist groups have increased since the beginning of 2014, in the northern most region of Cameroon. The Cameroonian army has had to engage in air strikes against Boko Haram in December.
President Biya has already been mentioned in previous videos produced by Shekau. Biya has frequently spoken out against the terrorist group. He has used the term "total eradication" in regards to the group.
The Islamists, who launch deadly attacks almost daily in northeastern Nigeria, have seized more than twenty towns of this region, proclaiming a "caliphate" in areas under their control.
Boko Haram had captured a major military base last week in far northeastern Nigeria, on the shores of Lake Chad, and took control of the borders with Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
President Biya had personally ordered his army to resort to airstrikes to protect the Cameroonian military base that had been attacked by Islamists in late December.
