Fox News now bringing in more viewers than CNN; internal problems at CNN reported

It once commanded viewers around the world, in particular in the Nineties during Desert Storm. Cable news channel CNN has now hit 21-year lows in both total viewers and those in the 25-54 year old demographic. While MSNBC and Fox News experienced a much less significant drop in primetime ratings, MSNBC brought in 689,000 total viewers and Fox News drew 1.79 million total viewers.

CNN Anderson Cooper news anchor has publicly acknowledged that he is gay, ending years of reluctance to talk about his personal life in public.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Fox News brought in more viewers than CNN, MSNBC and HLN in both total day and in primetime. MSNBC ranks number one in total day, sales day and primetime ratings among viewers ages 18 through 34.

The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that CNN primetime hosts Anderson Cooper and Piers Morgan experienced "big drops" in their respective time slots.

Daily ratings for CNN stumbled to their lowest in more than a decade, or since 2001, with 319,000 the average total viewers and 129,000 adults 25-54 - 35 and 41 percent drops, respectively.

Back in May, CNN experienced its lowest single week in May during its entire history. The month prior had been the network's lowest in over a decade.

"As a news organization our ratings reflect the news environment much more so than the other networks. That said, we always want higher ratings but not at the expense of non-partisan, quality journalism," a CNN spokesperson said.

Adding to the gloomy outlook for the former news leader are reports of clashes between some of CNN's highest-level managers. These differences are a main source of tension and confusion within the network.

CNN Worldwide managing editor Mark Whitaker and CNN President-US Ken Jautz have significantly different approaches to running the network, adding stress to the already bedeviled network.

Time Warner executives were considering replacing CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton, the executive who oversees both Whitaker and Jautz.

On top of everything else, CNN misreported that the Supreme Court struck down the individual mandate clause within President Obama's Affordable Care Act. While CNN was not alone in making this mistake -- Fox News was at first similarly guilty, the mistake was a costly one for a network that touts its ability to report breaking news.

In a related news item, CNN Anderson Cooper news anchor has that he is gay, ending years of reluctance to talk about his personal life in public.

Cooper wrote in an online letter that he had kept his sexual orientation private for personal and professional reasons, but came to think that remaining silent had given some people a mistaken impression that he was ashamed.

"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself and proud," he wrote in the letter.
