Has it really been almost 40 years since the Swedish rock group ABBA won over the record-buying public with "Waterloo?" Indeed it has - and the occasion just may very well trigger a reunion of one of the world's most successful pop bands ever! Blonde songstress Agnetha Faltskog confirmed the news with a German newspaper this past weekend.
One of the few times that members of ABBA were to reunite was at the premiere of "Mama Mia" in 1986. Singers Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Faltskog are in the center of this picture.
LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Formed in 1972, ABBA first hit the big time with the single "Waterloo," which won them the Eurovision song contest in 1974 and catapulted them to worldwide fame.
Becoming one of the world's best-selling pop bands ever, ABBA had a long string of number one hits such as "Mamma Mia", "Dancing Queen" and "Super Trouper."
"Of course it's something we're thinking about," 63-year-old Faltskog told the weekly newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
"There seem to be plans to do something to mark this anniversary in some way. But I can't say at this point what will come of them," she said.
Faltskog formed ABBA in 1972 with guitarist and songwriter -- and later husband -- Bjorn Ulvaeus, as well as Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.
ABBA's last album, "The Visitors" hit the charts in 1982.
Faltskog and Ulvaeus, and Andersson and Lyngstad were both married couples, and both divorced. The band itself never formally broke up.
ABBA sold more than 380 million records worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
After their last album, both Faltskog and Lyngstad pursued solo careers. Andersson and Ulvaeus wrote the hit Broadway musical "Chess and reworked 24 ABBA hits into the musical "Mamma Mia," which went on to be made into a box office smash hit film starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.
All four ABBA members have persistently ruled out doing so in the past, although the four members did reunite for the Swedish premiere of the movie "Mamma Mia," marking only the second time all of them had appeared together in public since 1986.
Ulvaeus and Andersson had previously declared there was "simply no motivation to regroup . We would like people to remember us as we were, young, exuberant and full of ambition," Ulvaeus said.
Faltskog says that time for a possible reunion is running out. "We're all getting older. I can't imagine going onto the stage on walking sticks," Faltskog said.
