Threats from online hackers bolstered decision

It is the most disgraceful bit of news to come from the film industry in many years - and it's not over the scandalous behavior on the part of actors, directors and other creative personnel . Sony Pictures says it's pulling the theatrical release of the film "The Interview" after receiving threatening emails. A satirical film involving the assassination attempt of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, it's an example of a major entertainment firm in the west is kowtowing to the demands of a ruthless dictator.

'The Interview' may wind up a vanished film, available only n the grey market or on clandestine movie sites. A Sony Studio representative said that Sony had 'no further plans' to release the comedy, on either VOD or DVD.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - U.S. officials have reportedly linked a massive cyber attack against Sony to North Korea.

"We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public," Sony said in a statement. "We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."

In announcing the decision to cancel the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy, Sony also hit back at the hackers who threatened movie theaters and film fans. The cyber attacks have unsettled the studio and its employees for weeks.

"Those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private emails and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale - all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like," the statement reads.

Seth Rogen and James Franco star in the picture, which cost $42 million to produce.

Internal documents, email messages, film budgets, spreadsheets detailing top executive salaries and the social security numbers of thousands of employees were leaked online in the cyber attack.

A threatening email accompanied an earlier data dump this week, threatening violence on theaters that showed "The Interview" and people who attend screenings.

"The world will be full of fear," the message reads. "Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time. (If your house is nearby, you'd better leave.)"

While shameful, it's par for the course for Hollywood. In the 1930's, American films that criticized the Nazi party were usually downplayed or censored over fears of offending the lucrative German film market. This policy continued almost all the way until 1938, when Hitler invaded Poland, starting World War II.
