Hace unos días se estrenó en Estados Unidos el filme "Captain Phillips", un intenso thriller basado en hechos reales que narra el rescate del capitán de un barco carguero secuestrado por piratas en el año 2009 en las costas somalíes y retrata el heroísmo del comandante Francis Xavier Castellano, quien asegura que su fe católica le ayudó en esa dura prueba.

(ACI/EWTN Noticias) - Castellano estuvo al mando del destructor USS Bainbridge, un buque de guerra estadounidense, durante el exitoso operativo que culminó el 12 de abril de 2009, en la noche del domingo de Pascua.

El carguero Maersk Alabama fue secuestrado el 9 de abril de 2009. El capitán Richard Phillips -interpretado por Tom Hanks- salvó a su tripulación y su barco entregándose como rehén a los delincuentes. Los secuestradores armados con ametralladoras AK- 47 abandonaron el barco a bordo de un bote salvavidas y durante tres días lo mantienen cautivo.

El comandante Castellano -interpretado por Yul Vazquez- a bordo del buque Bainbridge persiguió a los piratas, entabló comunicación con ellos y trató de calmarlos. La tensión duró 72 horas.

Castellano, un ex monaguillo que ahora sirve como guía, lector y ministro extraordinario de la Comunión, asegura que su fe lo ayudó en ese difícil momento.

"No necesitas ser capitán de un buque de guerra o presidente de una empresa o algo por estilo para ser un héroe", expresó Castellano en una entrevista a los Caballeros de Colón.

"Cada día podemos hacer algo, poco a poco, para seguir adelante y mostrar rasgos heroicos, solamente siendo auténticos, hombres católicos, hombres de fe".

"Creo que todos los padres son héroes para sus familias", dijo Castellano.

"Sus hijos y esposas los admiran. Pienso que nuestro llamado al heroísmo en la vida cotidiana significa ser miembros permanentes de la comunidad, defender lo que creemos, ser modelos a seguir como padres, y modelos a seguir para la comunidad, ayudando a los más necesitados y entregándoles nuestro tiempo".

"Ser padre es algo muy importante junto con las obligaciones que esto implica lo que incluye ser un modelo a seguir para tus hijos, ir a la iglesia, expresar tu fe, rezar con tu familia, y estar ahí cuando te necesiten. Tú quieres ser el mejor para tus hijos, y la mejor manera de hacer esto posible es buscando ser un gran ejemplo para ellos", añadió.

"Para mi, ser católico es muy importante. Durante la misión de rescate del capitán Richard Phillips, mi fe católica junto con ser un Caballero de Colón jugaron un rol muy importante en lo que yo creía, queríamos traer al capitán Phillips de vuelta a casa para la seguridad de su familia y resguardar el bienestar de todos", añadió.

Castellano, lejos considerarse un héroe por su participación en el rescate, expresa su admiración por los marinos del Maersk Alabama quienes sin haber recibido entrenamiento para este tipo de situaciones, pudieron recuperar su nave.
