'Monsters University' at the top; 'White House Down,' an apparent flop
before the Fourth of July weekend, Hollywood anxiously viewed box
office receipts over the past several days to spot trends. Disney and
Pixar's "Monsters University" hung on to the Number One spot, as
families with kids are all craving 'toons. The female buddy
action-comedy "The Heat" came in at a strong second place, while "White
House Down" opened at a very disappointing fourth place.
"Monsters University" remains at the top of the box office as families looking for summer fun are craving 'toons.
LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Total film-going this weekend was down more than eight percent from a year ago for only $192 million. There is high interest to see when the last time all Top Five movies made more than $20 million dollars plus for the three-day weekend.
Numbers fluctuated on Friday but settled down for Saturday and Sunday. Pixar/Disney's huge hit "Monsters University" held on to the top spot from a week ago.
Far more interesting are the weekend's two newcomers. Twentieth Century Fox's "The Heat" debuted a big #2 as fan favorite Melissa McCarthy again sets off R-rated fireworks with audiences.
Boasting a $41 million budget, "The Heat" is getting a lot of positive buzz. Chalk up another strong box office performance for Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, and "look for word of mouth to really kick in now, and The Heat to be hot for a good long while this summer," a Fox executive says.
On the other hand, Sony Pictures' "White House Down" disappointed in fourth place, opening a third less than Hollywood expected and ensuring its high cost will make it impossible to recoup.
Sony is still hoping to turn the tide as the big weekend still lies ahead. Both "the Heat" and "White House Down" received "A-" CinemaScores from audiences to help word of mouth.
The Top Ten this past weekend were:
1. "Monsters University"
2. "The Heat"
3. "World War Z 3D"
4. "White House Down"
5. "Man of Steel 3D"
6. "This Is the End"
7. "Now You See Me"
8. "Fast & Furious 6"
9. "Star Trek into Darkness"
10. "The Internship"
