We need God's mercy, and today's ashes remind us of this fact. We are sinners and will die, be judged, and spend eternity with God in heaven, or without Him in Hell. We need to fast and do penance for our sins, such is the purpose and lesson of Lent. Father recounts a priest telling him "If you're not going to fast, don't receive the ashes." The ashes remind us of our fate of death, the fact we are sinners, and that we need to do penance. Let us begin to prepare for death and eternity today! Ave Maria!
