LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – The resort area had dwindled in popularity recently. Last year, the country was in the grip of a swine flu epidemic.

Cancun also reported a shortage of vacation dollars due to last year's global economic crisis. Cheap airfare from the United States and package vacation deals have once again made Cancun the place to party.

Cancun saw a drop of one million visitors in 2009. As of last month, 85 percent of all available hotel rooms were filled. Those figures were expected to go even higher in March, when more universities go on spring break.

The beaches are full with young revelers, who dance to music from gigantic speakers. Many tourists are from the U.S. Midwest and Canada, hoping to shake off the cold winter weather under sun-filled skies.

"I was expecting a good party but it went above and beyond," one tourist says. "There is always a party on the beach and you can party all day and party all night!"

Many more tourists from the U.S. And Canada are visiting popular Mexico vacation spots, in spite of a U.S. travel alert warning Americans to stay away from some parts, mostly in the northern border states, because of drug violence.

Last year's swine flu epidemic virtually paralyzed Mexico, forcing the closure of schools, restaurants and archaeological sites. Statistics say Mexico's revenue from foreign tourism dropped 15 percent to $11.3 billion from $13.3 billion in 2008.
