St. Felix of Nola
Patron of Nola, Italy
Felix was the son of Hermias, a Syrian who had been a Roman soldier. He was born on his father's estate at Nola near Naples, Italy. On the death of his father, Felix distributed his inheritance to the poor, was ordained by Bishop St. Maximus of Nola, and became his assistant. When Maximus fled to the desert at the beginning of Decius' persecution of the Christians in 250, Felix was seized in his stead and imprisoned. He was reputedly released from prison by an angel, who directed him to the ailing Maximus, whom he brought back to Nola. Even after Decius' death in 251, Felix was a hunted man but kept well hidden until the persecution ended. When Maximus died, the people unanimously selected Felix as their Bishop, but he declined the honor in favor of Quintus, a senior priest. Felix spent the rest of his life on a small piece of land sharing what he had with the poor, and died there on January 14. His tomb soon became famous for the miracles reported there, and when St. Paulinus became bishop of Nola almost a century later (410), he wrote about his predecessor, the source of our information about him, adding legendary material that had grown up about Felix in the intervening century. His feast day is January 14th.

St. Felix of Nola, Please continue to pray for me to list my priorities in life, as the Lord perceives them.

When asked by Roman Soldiers if he had seen Felix the Bishop on the road, he replied, "I have been walking this road since early morning, and I have seen no one." Felix's miracle is so believable, even in our skeptical age. After his exchange with the Romans, Felix knew it wouldn't be long until they realized his identity. He quickly looked for some place to hide and found a shallow cave not far off the road. While Felix hid in the shadows praying to be allowed to continue his work, a spider came down and spun its web across the entrance. The wind blew dust from the road onto the web. When the soldiers came upon the cave, fatigued from their march, they didn't bother to look further than the dusty web blocking its entrance. Was the spider's handiwork the answer to Felix's prayer, or was it just coincidence? As it is with all miracles, the only way we can really know is through faith.

St. Felix of Nola, I offer my family to you this morning, Guard, guide and pray for us. I recommend all our needs both spiritual and temporalt to you. Intecede for us in Heaven, in the presence of the Holy Trinity. I love your humility and most of all your loyalty to your Bishop and dedicated service to the poor. Amen.
Wonderful! I say that because most of us know many stories of the lives of saints who have lived public, dramatic lives, but, as inspirational as these are, what we need as well is news of humility and voluntary obscurity.
