Deacon and witness to the execution of St. Cyprian of Carthage. A deacon of Cyprian at Carthage, Pontius followed the bishop into the exile imposed upon him during the persecution of the Church under Emperor Valerian. Attending Cyprian's famous martyrdom, he authored an account of the event. The work, Vita et Passia Cvpriani, was not so much a biography of the bishop as a touching and vivid panegyric. Nevertheless, it is considered the earliest Christian biography.
