CatholicTV to Air Ordination of Three New Bishops Including America's Youngest Bishop

MA (April 22, 2011) - On May 5th, CatholicTV will air (live) the episcopal ordination Mass for three new bishops of the Archdiocese of Detroit including: Bishop-designate Donald Hanchon, Bishop-designate Michael Byrnes, and Bishop-designate Arturo Cepeda, who will become the youngest Bishop in the U.S. at age 41.

The Mass will air live at 2 p.m. (Eastern) at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV cable outlets.

After the live broadcast, the Mass will be added to the CatholicTV.com archives, where it will be viewable (free of charge) anytime at http://www.CatholicTV.com/catholic-television

Bishop-designate Arturo Cepeda

Jose Arturo Cepeda Escobedo, STL, STD, 41, was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Bishop-designate Cepeda earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in religious studies with a minor in psychology from the College Seminary of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Santa Fe, New Mexico and a Masters of Divinity degree from Assumption Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1996. He also attended Pontifical University in Rome, where he was awarded a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL) and Doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD) degree.

Since his return to San Antonio, he has fulfilled teaching and formation duties at Assumption Seminary and Oblate School of Theology, has served as Vocation Director and much more. Bishop-designate Cepeda was made Vice Rector of Assumption Seminary in San Antonio in 2009. In 2010, he was installed as the seminary's Rector, where he has served until the present time.

Bishop-designate Michael Byrnes:
Bishop-designate Byrnes, 52, was born in Detroit and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology from the University of Michigan. He began ministerial work in campus ministry at Eastern Michigan University, became involved in the Charismatic Renewal, and entered Sacred Heart Major Seminary in 1990. He was ordained a priest May 25, 1996. He later received a doctorate in sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He has taught at the seminary and ministered at parishes. He has been vice rector of Sacred Heart Major Seminary and pastor of Presentation/Our Lady of Victory Parish in Detroit since 2004.

Bishop-designate Donald Hanchon:
Bishop-designate Hanchon, 63, was born in Jackson, MI and attended Sacred Heart Seminary, St. John's Provincial Seminary, University of Notre Dame, and University of Detroit, and was ordained a priest Oct. 19, 1974 at St. Mary Church in Wayne by Bishop Joseph Imesch. He has spent his priesthood serving at a number of parishes in Detroit, Monroe, Warren, and Port Huron. He has been pastor of Holy Redeemer in Detroit since 1999 and in 2009 was named episcopal vicar for the archdiocese's Central Region. He also has taught at Sacred Heart Major Seminary and has served as archdiocesan coordinator for Hispanic ministries.
