Symposium on Guissani's The Religious Sense, Franciscan Missions

STEUBENVILLE, OH (March 25, 2011) - Franciscan University will host "The Religious Sense: A Symposium" on Saturday, April 2, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the Seminar Room of the St. Joseph Center. The symposium is free and open to the public, and will take place in two parts.

"We've organized a formal discussion about Msgr. Luigi Giussani's book The Religious Sense because we see this book as an extremely useful tool for healing the split between faith and knowledge--which reduces faith to feelings and ethics--that is so prevalent in our society today," said Franciscan University English Department chair Dr. Stephen Lewis.

"Giussani, a priest from Milan, Italy, who founded the Catholic movement Communion and Liberation in 1954, argued that the 'religious sense' is the name for the most profound level of the human being, that level where, regardless of our ethnic or cultural background, we ask the fundamental questions about the meaning of life. By facing these questions, rather than reducing or avoiding them, and comparing the things I encounter in reality with these fundamental needs, I start to pursue a truly human life," Lewis added.

From 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Father Antonio López, FSCB, the dean of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and Family, and Professor John Zucchi QC, professor of history, McGill University, Montréal, will speak on "The Religious Sense: Educating the Heart, Verifying the Faith." Dr. Regis Martin, professor of systematic theology at Franciscan University, will serve as moderator.

Professor Zucchi, who translated the book from Italian to English, will discuss how the book's educational proposal has impacted efforts to combat recent attempts in Quebec to legalize euthanasia and force private schools to offer an "ethics and religions" course, the content of which is dictated by the government.

From 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Professor Damian Bacich of San José State University will give a presentation titled "The Spanish Missions in the New World: Educating the Person." Professor Bacich will discuss how the Franciscan missions in Baja and California were established as centers for the education of the whole person.

This symposium is organized by Communion and Liberation of Steubenville, with sponsorship from the Humanities and Catholic Social Thought Department, the Department of English, the Human Life Studies Program, the Franciscan Heritage Fund, and the St. Thomas More Society.
