A Nearly-Frustrated Deathbed Request

BERWYN, IL (March 1, 2011) - If your death was near, who would you want by your side when it was time? For Mother Kolumba Bialecka, foundress of the Dominican Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, two persons were necessary -- a priest and St. Joseph, patron of a happy death.

March 18, the eve of the solemnity of St. Joseph, is the anniversary of Mother Kolumba's death, an event that will be remembered around the world by the congregation she founded.

When Mother Kolumba felt assured that this was her last day of life, she said a prayer and a song with her sisters to St. Joseph, and then asked a priest who was there, "I desire one more grace -- to have a priest at the moment of my death."

The priest, identified in a biography only as a confessor, said, "The Lord will make it happen that the Reverend Mother will have this if you treasure so much this grace."

Soon afterwards, when she had made her final confession, he left the room. And yet filled with concern that he would not be near, she called out to the priest, but he did not hear her. She was so upset that another sister had to calm her down and convince her that they would certainly call the priest back from another part of the convent when it was time.

When the time came, he gave Mother the last absolution and knelt by the bed. The biographer says, "Dearest Mother raised her eyes as if thanking the Lord for this last grace in her life that she could have a priest in the moment of death. Next she looked at all of us with such a sentiment of love that it is just indescribable."

She then fell asleep, and about an hour later gave her soul to her heavenly Father.
