STEUBENVILLE, OH (February 22, 2011) - Family members of the late Terri Schiavo--whose court-ordered death by dehydration and starvation gripped the nation's attention in 2005--will speak at Franciscan University of Steubenville on Thursday, March 10.
Their presentation, "Suffering in Love: A Family Affair," will be held at 9:00 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel. Joining Terri's mother, Mary Schindler, will be her sister, Suzanne Vitadamo, and her brother, Bobby Schindler.
Coinciding with the start of Lent, the evening will draw on strong spiritual themes and include the Stations of the Cross as the family members draw parallels between Terri's suffering and her fight for life, and the passion and death of Jesus.
"Christ's suffering and torture surpasses anything we went through," says Vitadamo, "However, from our suffering we learned about redemptive suffering, which is a lost concept in today's world."
"Hundreds of souls have been led back to God through the cross Terri carried," says Bobby Schindler.
The event is sponsored by the Franciscan University club, Students for Life. "Terri's family is sending a message to the world that everyone can learn from and that strikes at the heart of the right-to life-struggle," says Brother John Paoletti, MIC, Students for Life president. "Why does God allow suffering? What good can come of it? Where do I turn when I am without hope?"
In 1990, at the age of 26, Terri Schiavo suffered sudden cardio-respiratory arrest. She was placed on a ventilator, but was soon able to breathe on her own and maintain vital functions. She remained in a severely compromised neurological state and was provided a PEG tube to ensure the safe delivery of nourishment and hydration.
Following years of legal disputes, on March 31, 2005, at age 41, Terri Schindler Schiavo died after more than 13 days without nutrition or hydration under the order of Florida's Sixth Judicial Court. Through the Terri Schiavo Life and Hope Network, the family continues the fight for the lives of people with disabilities.
